报告简介:
There is a growing interest in deriving products and functional materials from renewable feedstock to lower our reliance on fossil fuel and to reduce the environmental footprint of these products. Professor Yan’s team has done extensive research in synthesizing bio-based epoxy resins using biomolecules as the starting material. They have successfully produced environmentally-friendly bio-based epoxies from bark extractives and vanillin replacing toxic Bisphenol A. In particular, they have synthesized high performance mechanically strong bio-base epoxies from vanillin with excellent fire-retardant functionalities by incorporating organophosphorus moieties in the molecular backbone of the resin. By taking advantage of some distinctive properties of novel lignin containing nanofibril cellulose, bio-based epoxy composites were made that had superior mechanical properties and barrier performance. An overview of the resin synthesis processes and results from chemical, mechanical, interfacial, and performance characterization tests of the bio resins and bio-based composites will be presented.
